Introduction

Success leaves clues.

Rafi Chowdhury, founder of Chowdhury’s Digital, shares his thoughts on the past, present, and future of the company, as well as the insight he gained from running the business.

Who is Rafi Chowdhury?

Q: Who are you and what’s your background?

I was born in Bangladesh and raised mostly in Memphis, Tennessee. I help companies generate more revenue by helping them get more visitors to their website and then helping them convert those visitors into paying customers. I am also a journalist and regularly maintain columns on magazines such as Huffpost, Business.com, Thrive Global and others.

Q: Who has been your biggest influence, and why did they have such a significant effect on you?

I have been following the works of Yuval Noah Harari recently. I first read his book Sapiens and realized how thought-provoking it was. Since then, I have read his other books also and watched many of his talks. Harari challenges his readers to think objectively about various circumstances and encourages us to be more inclusive of those who are different from us. His views on the search for truth are commendable as well.

Q: Knowing what you know now, what would you have told yourself when you were in your twenties?

  • Find someone who has had 10 years of experience doing what I want to do and has a track record of being successful. Do whatever it takes to partner with this person and get his mentorship. Of course, provide value to him / her also in the process.
  • Save and invest at least 50% of my income. No matter what life’s circumstances may be, always living off only 50% of my income is what I would do.
  • I would read more books on consciousness and happiness and would have started reading my Bible a lot earlier.

Business

Q: What is Chowdhury’s Digital?

Chowdhury’s Digital provides innovative branding and market research solutions to business owners and marketers. Started by Rafi Chowdhury in 2014, it has since grown into a $MM company and is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee.

Q: What makes your company different from its competitors?

Chowdhury’s Digital has held true to its humble beginnings by still continuing to be a small business and serving the local community, despite being a globally managed organization. Although we have team members around the world, we focus heavily on taking care of our neighbors first, the local Memphians.

Q: What led you to Chowdhury’s Digital?

In 2013, I launched my personal website www.rafichowdhury.com as a blog mainly dedicated to chess. Within a span of two years, the website grew tremendously. I realized I had a talent that was highly desirable by small business owners and they needed help really bad. Hence, Chowdhury’s Digital is what I launched so that I could operate under its name and help the mom and pop shops who were desperately competing against the internet giants for market share.

Q: What has the experience of building the business taught you?

Make entrepreneurship your back-up plan until it becomes your main hustle.

If you are figuring out what career path to choose, always start with the one that has the highest chance of working out. Only after you have something really solid going for yourself can you afford to go down the risky path of being a full-time entrepreneur.

Q: Where do you see things headed for you in the next 5 years?

To be honest, I have no idea. With covid going on, life as well as business is very volatile. The main thing I am focusing on is to keep doing what I am doing and learning and watching the market daily to see what the new demands are and honing my skills and offerings according to the market demands. On a personal level, I am doing my MBA currently and looking into going into a doctoral program in experimental psychology afterwards.
