New Bern is a city in North Carolina that lies on the Neuse River. The confluence of the Trent and the Pamlico rivers forms a large estuary near the city, which is home to a variety of animals, including dolphins. New Bern was settled in 1710 by Swiss and Palatine German immigrants, and was named after Bern, Switzerland. The city is home to several landmarks, including Tryon Palace, which served as the colonial governor's palace; the Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral, the first Anglican church in North Carolina; and the New Bern National Cemetery, which contains the graves of over 4,000 Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. New Bern's top employers include Craven County Schools, New Bern-Craven County Airport, CarolinaEast Medical Center, and Pepsi Bottling Ventures.
