Clayton County is bordered on the north by Henry County, on the east by DeKalb County, on the south by Fulton County, and on the west by Butts County. The county has a total area of 221 square miles (572 km²), of which 220 square miles (570 km²) is land and 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²) (0.5%) is water. As of the 2010 census, there were 287,518 people, 103,722 households, and 73,906 families residing in the county. The population density was 1,302 people per square mile (501/km²). There were 112,290 housing units at an average density of 511 per square mile (197/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 44.4% White, 41.4% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.8% from other races, and 2.
